Group Coaching Skills workshop

Group Coaching is a small group collaborative developmental process where participants with similar thematic needs are supported by a coach facilitating their growth, change and achievement of individual goals.

Catalyst 14

Group coaching programmes are on the rise within organisations as they provide an effective way of maximising the impact of the coaching provision and return on investment.

For example, group coaching programmes are being offered to specific groups of leaders, providing transition support for a new role; parents returning to work; or perhaps as part of an L&D strategy (i.e., leadership or peer reflection circles).

From our supervision of coaches, we are seeing that 1 to 1 coaches are being asked to provide group coaching without appropriate support or development.

The questions about group coaching that coaches typically bring to discuss are:

  • How do I set up an effective group coaching programme?
  • Will my 1 to 1 coaching skills be enough?
  • What other tools and approaches do I need to learn?
  • How can I manage specific group dynamics?
  • How do I build my confidence to move into delivering group coaching?

As a coach, your ability to authentically facilitate an individual and group’s development process with skill, insight and presence is key to the success of an intervention.

Yet when you first step into this role and into a group coaching environment, you may find that your personal anxiety and vulnerabilities are dialled up dramatically. In addition, in the group coaching space, you will also be meeting the anxieties and vulnerabilities of the group along with those from the wider system; so there’s a great deal for you to hold! This can all have an impact on authority, presence and capacity to build the container for the group coaching space, and to intervene.

Our group coaching skills workshop has been designed to meet this gap and is delivered by a faculty team that has a wealth of experience within the field of group and team coaching, group dialogue and adult learning.

The workshop combines elements of theory, demonstration, skills building and role modelling alongside extensive practice, feedback and discussion.

The workshop will enable you to:

  • deliver effective Group Coaching Programmes face-to-face or online.
  • understand how to contract for an effective group coaching skills programme
  • learn how to create an effective container and learning environment
  • deepen self-awareness of own triggers and relational patterns when holding the group coaching process
  • develop a group coaching toolkit
  • understand the continuum of group coaching approaches
  • develop and practice core dialogue and group coaching skills
  • understand ways to support a group to cross the threshold into a more dialogic space where participants not only talk together but think, learn and grow together.
  • learn a model of four dialogic actions that allow people to ‘read the room’, style flex and participate in more meaningful conversations.
  • learn ways to develop trust with and within a group
  • build capability to work with and manage group dynamics
  • understand how to manage resistance and conflict within the group
  • develop an authentic and congruent style as a group coach
  • build confidence and appreciation of own group coaching style through practise and feedback from our faculty and fellow participants.

On completion you will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Location

This workshop takes place either face-to-face in Central London or online.

Face-to-face training takes place at Coram, based just 10 minutes’ walk from King’s Cross, the venue offers bright and spacious training rooms and outdoor space in which we can work. By basing our programmes here, we are also supporting the work that Coram are doing to improve the lives of children across the UK. Based on feedback from our courses, we have found that participants greatly value being able to chat informally with cohort colleagues and faculty during breaks, which is why we always include lunch and refreshments on our face to face workshops at no extra charge.
